A Pretty (Tough) Ride

Today was a really pretty ride. If we could just get a day without wind, though, it would be even better! The first 20 miles weren't terrific. A narrow & rough shoulder with truck traffic. When I did look up, it seemed to be mile after mile of antique shops and the dismantling of what has to be the world's biggest outdoor antique fair, which I take it ended on the weekend.

After about 25 miles we turned on to a quieter and much prettier road, and then stayed on that terrain for most of the rest of the day. Lots of farms and ranches, some of them appearing to be quite prosperous and some with beautiful views out over miles of rolling hills covered by lots of greenery - trees & grasses. We were treated to a beautiful display of wildflowers beside the road and in the fields all day.

We rode through some small communities with huge historic significance, including Washington which served as the capital of the independent nation of Texas several times in the mid-1800's. Only slightly larger than Washington was the "city" of Round Top.

Stats for the day: 70 miles from La Grange TX to Navasota TX. 4300 feet of climbing on gentle rolling hills. Rest day tomorrow. It sounds like the highlight might be a trip to the world's smallest Wal-Mart.

  1. Love the armadillo! How common are they? Also, wouldn't want to tangle with that steer! Enjoy your day off!!

    1. Hi Lynn - apparently they're very common; pests really. However that was the only live one that we saw.
