Good Times with Granny

Well, I made up for ignoring Granny yesterday. Early in the day we rode about 13 miles in two State Parks - Bastrop and Buescher. Very twisty and hilly roads. There were probably over a dozen short hills with grades in double digits. The ones I remember were - 23%, 21%, 20% and 19%. What did I do for entertainment before I had a GPS? Very fun!

Our total day was just 42 miles from Bastrop TX to La Grange TX. Although humid, it wasn't too hot or sunny. Good temps for climbing 2600 feet. We continue to see entrances to ranches along the road, although the houses and animals are usually set back beyond our view. We did see some interesting looking cattle (below), as well as some longhorns (which stampeded away from the fence before I could get my camera out). Lots of pretty flowers of many colours along the roadside all day. And we had lots of time to look at them - headwinds for much of the day yet again! We got in early and had lots of time to explore the historic downtown of La Grange before returning to the hotel and solving my laundry problem.

  1. The cattle are Brahman...the sacred cows of India! They are well known for their drought and insect tolerance and have been used/crossbred in Mexico and south Texas for that reason.

Isn't la Grange a lovely little town? Thanks for including the Texas Quilt Museum pic - that's two for the quilters!

  2. OMG headwinds and pitches in the 20's on a heavy bike - that's a challenge no matter how short the climb! My experience of Texas has been mostly around flat old Houston-Galveston so your travelogue has really revised my image of the state.
